Background of the Study
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has revolutionized many sectors, including education, by introducing tools that enhance student learning experiences. AI-powered chatbots are one such tool, capable of providing personalized support to students. In Birnin Kebbi Local Government Area, Kebbi State, where resources may be limited, chatbots have the potential to serve as cost-effective educational assistants. These chatbots can be used for providing answers to student inquiries, explaining lessons, guiding them through assignments, and offering emotional support (Oluwadare & Shehu, 2024).

The role of chatbots in student support is becoming increasingly significant as schools seek innovative ways to enhance engagement, particularly in large classrooms where teachers may not always have the time to attend to each student individually. AI-powered chatbots can offer 24/7 support, providing answers to frequently asked questions, clarifying concepts, and guiding students through learning materials, thereby enhancing their learning experience (Sani & Abubakar, 2025). However, the implementation and effectiveness of such systems in secondary schools in Birnin Kebbi have not been thoroughly studied. This research will investigate how AI-powered chatbots can be utilized to enhance student support in these schools.

Statement of the Problem
Although AI-powered chatbots have been implemented in various educational contexts, their application in Birnin Kebbi’s secondary schools is still underexplored. There is a need to assess the potential benefits and challenges of using chatbots for student support in this region. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of chatbots in enhancing student engagement, providing academic assistance, and supporting emotional well-being in secondary schools in Birnin Kebbi.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of AI-powered chatbots in providing student support in secondary schools in Birnin Kebbi.

  2. To investigate the impact of AI-powered chatbots on student engagement and learning outcomes.

  3. To identify the challenges and opportunities in the implementation of AI-powered chatbots in Birnin Kebbi’s secondary schools.

Research Questions

  1. How effective are AI-powered chatbots in providing academic and emotional support to students in Birnin Kebbi?

  2. What impact do AI-powered chatbots have on student engagement and learning outcomes in Birnin Kebbi’s secondary schools?

  3. What challenges are faced by teachers and students in using AI-powered chatbots for student support?

Research Hypotheses

  1. AI-powered chatbots significantly enhance student engagement and learning outcomes in secondary schools in Birnin Kebbi.

  2. Students perceive AI-powered chatbots as effective tools for academic assistance and emotional support.

  3. Teachers and students face challenges in the implementation and utilization of AI-powered chatbots in Birnin Kebbi’s secondary schools.

Significance of the Study
The findings of this study will provide insights into the potential of AI-powered chatbots in improving student support and engagement. The study will guide educators and policymakers in Birnin Kebbi in integrating chatbots into the education system to provide timely support to students and improve overall learning experiences.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on secondary schools within Birnin Kebbi Local Government Area, examining the use of AI-powered chatbots for student support. It will not extend to primary schools or other local government areas in Kebbi State. Limitations may include variations in access to technology across schools and potential resistance to the adoption of AI-based systems.
